Tanzania professional boxer Nassib Ramadhan has expressed optimism over excelling in a high profile domestic non-title fight scheduled later this month in Dar es Salaam. He is expected to take on the winner of the bout pitting Francis Miyeyusho against Fadhil Majiha, which has been penned for February 28 in the city. Ramadhan won the Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) Africa Super Bantamweight title after overcoming Issa Omary by unanimous decision in a ten-round bout held at Friends Corner hall in Dar es Salaam last Saturday.
He said he has taken a week-long rest and will be back to training next week to put himself in great shape ahead of the forthcoming fight, which has been organised by prominent Tanga-based boxing promoter, Ally Mwazoa. He boasted to have a good knowledge of Miyeyusho and Majiha and will have no trouble commanding a win over either of the duo.
“I’m confident I will overcome either of the two boxers. I beat Majiha in the past and I lost to Miyeyusho by technical knockout…I developed a cut and I had to surrender,” Ramadhan said. Ramadhan beat Majiha by split decision in a ten-round non-title bout at the Friends’ Corner hall on June 9, 2012 and succumbed to a tenth round technical knockout loss to Miyeyusho in the UBO Intercontinental Bantamweight title fight at the PTA Hall on December 9, the same year.
Promoter Mwazoa said last Saturday that apart from the Miyeyusho versus Majiha fight, there will be a re-match between Kilimanjaro’s Emilio Norfat and Dar es Salaam’s Mohamed Matumla. The day’s another fight will see Dar’s Sadick Momba take on Tanga’s Juma Mustafa.
Norfat, against the odds, beat Matumla by split decision in one of the supporting bouts for the Ramadhan versus Nampepeche fight. Mustafa was expected to fight Amos Mwamakula in the day’s another under card bout but the latter failed to show much to the disappointment of spectators.
Ramadhan was impressive throughout the UBO Africa Super Bantamweight title fight against Omary, in which he pursued the latter all over the right and manage to land a series of powerful jabs, whereas Omary resorted to a defensive approach for the better part and somewhat, showcased his punching skills in the seventh and ninth rounds. The fight’s judges, Robert Kasiga, Said Chaku and Pembe Ndava, scored 97-93, 98-92 and 98-92 in Ramadhan’s favour, much to the delight of the fighter’s fans.
“It was a good fight. I prepared well for it and I went on to prove my worth…my opponent, somewhat, attempted to challenge but he was backtracking for the better part,” Ramadhan said. Ramadhan said Omary’s performance is still below par and the latter has to work hard, should he wish to excel in major fights.
The win helped Ramadhan improve his record to 15 wins (seven knockouts), five losses (one knockout) and one draw in a total of 21 bouts he has taken part in. The southpaw fighter also boasts of the Tanzania Sports Writers (TASWA)’s best domestic professional boxer award he won in the 2012/13 season. Omary, who was also having a shot at winning the first world title, has 19 victories (seven knockouts), three losses and four draws in a total of 26 bouts he has fought.
Ramadhan is lately rated first out of 34 boxers in Tanzania and 105th out of 1,148 boxers in the world in the Super Bantamweight division by Boxrec, while Omary occupies the third position in Tanzania and 212th in the world in the network’s rating.
