TANZANIA Environmental Action Association (TEACA) has received a presidential award in recognition of its efforts to conserve the environment. Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Leonidas Gama, who handed over the award, urged stakeholders to join hands in the campaign, so that green scenery that was lost some years back is restored.
Mr Gama said it was imperative for leaders and executives from hamlet and village levels to cooperate with all environmental stakeholders, so as to attain the set goals to curb environmental degradation and mitigate the effects of climate change.
“What TEACA has been doing in conserving the environment has to be beefed up by other stakeholders. On my own behalf I sincerely wish many happy returns to them, that go with this award,” said Mr Gama who is known to be a great environmentalist.
TEACA has been vibrant on environmental protection since 1987, especially on areas surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro, by planting trees, raising awareness on ecology, adverse effects of cutting trees and degrading the environment. Mr Gama said the environment has to be safeguarded fully by all, saying it is the responsibility of individuals, groups formed as well as institutions and the job should not be left to the government and some non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Earlier on, TEACA Chairman, Mr Adoncome Mcharo said his organisation has planned to plant natural trees and those which are environmental friendly in different areas of Kilimanjaro Region, especially around Africa’s highest mountain. TEACA General Manager, Mr Charles Njau, said last year the organisation planted natural trees in 54 hectares of land, mostly around Mount Kilimanjaro.
“In future we are to cooperate with other stakeholders such as education institutions, religious organizations, women and youths groups to plant natural trees in all areas that need conservation so that by 2028 the ‘old’ Kilimanjaro is restored,” he said. TPC Limited, a sugar producing company and Rombo District Council also were presented with regional awards due to their efforts in protecting the environment.
Some education institutions, including primary and secondary schools in the region were also honoured. Efforts to conserve the environment spearheaded by RC Gama have borne fruits in many areas of the region, as tree felling has significantly reduced while many more are planted. The Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) has banned cutting of trees without a special permit and use of chain saw is prohibited.
