PLAN grants children protectors Honda bikes

Plan International Tanzania (PIT) handed over a grant of two Honda motorcycles worth Sh12m on Thursday to African Network for the Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) in the implementation of its Sh1.3bn project in Kisarawe and Kibaha Districts in the Coast Region.

The funds are part of the European Union (EU) contribution to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for The Violence  Against Children (VAC) project in the region.

Kisarawe District Project Coordinator Neema Daniel said the two-year project that would be implemented in a tripartite scheme involving Plan,  Save the Children International (SCI) and ANPPCAN would be accomplished in December this year.

She said  ANPPACN would carry out the project targeting 145,290 children and 142,213 guardians and parents by deploying its field officers in 25 villages in five wards, namely  Msimbu, Maneromango, Kisarawe, Mzenga and Masaki in the District of 16 wards.
The field officers who would also be charged with mobilizing and educating the public on the rights and security of children will work in collaboration with security committees for children to be established in wards and villages.

She said a survey conducted jointly by the government and UNICEF covering Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar in 2009 revealed  massive abuse of children’s rights and that  the rate of violence was high to the tune of one out three female children and one out of seven male children being affected, prompting the foundation into masterminding the project.

“That’s why we have come with this project to ensure that we protect them from rape, sodomy, child pregnancy, child abandoning, female and child genital mutilation, burning, child murdering, missing education and social services, especially the disabled,” she said.

According to her, most of the cases went unreported mainly due to lack of awareness on children’s rights among the community members, parents and guardians.

Plan which is headquartered in UK has its offices in  Dar es Salaam and in the districts of   Kilombero in Morogoro Region, Kisarawe and Kibaha in Coast region and also in Geita and Mwanza regions.
